When rock musicians die young, it's sad and a waste of talent.

But when they die at 60 or later, as one of Pink Floyd's founding members did recently, should we rejoice?

Reportedly, this gentleman ingested LOTS of LSD and perhaps other drugs and his habits curbed his ability to perform with the group.

So, the fact that his broken, or at least challenged, body transported him out of the 60's and carried him well into the new millennium has to be seen as a victory of sorts.

His passing got me to thinking about mortality, and specifically about occupations and their connection.

The question that popped into mind is how old can we expect to live if we choose rock and roll as our profession? Exactly, what is the life expectancy of a lead singer, a bass guitarist, or a drummer?

Though Sir Paul McCartney turned 64 the other day, you have to wonder is there a material difference between how long he and his colleagues can expect to last versus your typical life insurance salesman from Casper, Wyoming?

Speaking of life insurance, that industry is the repository of much knowledge regarding mortality. I would think there are occupational tables, actuarial statistics that predict that the average coal miner has say, a 65% chance of reaching age 70, while a college librarian enjoys an 80% chance.

With our national obsessions about fat and fitness and pure air and water why aren't more people discussing occupational mortality? Your job may be leading you to the grave faster than an occasional Big Mac or Marlboro.

Willie Nelson's admonition in the title of his song, "Mamas, Don't Let Your Babies Grow Up To Be Cowboys" might have an important message in it, after all.

When Bob Dylan and Joan Baez lovingly sang those lyrics to each other, "May you stay forever young!" perhaps they should have skipped the ballad and instead slipped each other applications to work at the post office.

I recommend this book as a reference to music teachers and everyone who is novice, but want to understand music. Not only this book helps readers who cannot play any instrument, as long as they know enough computer knowledge as self-described by the title, it also clearly explains the foundation of music. After making people understand the pitch and duration of notes on the staff system, it explains the way of measuring interval and then the definition or feature of each interval, base on semitone measurement. After assuring the readers about the perfect harmony of the fourth and the fifth interval, the author explained why this leads to the dominant and sub-dominant quality of the chord. The mode, the scale and the key signature are usually confusing, but the author explanation started from the simple C Major and then compares with A Minor, and then leads to the understanding of scaling system, major and minor of the seven diatonic, including the complex scale. Within the process, the author explained how to establish various key signatures based on a particular scale, not just the cycle of fifths.

Thanks again, to the author. This is really a godsend.

This book is the advanced user manual for your guitar. If you already know the basics such as chords and scales then this book is EXACTLY what you need.

Basically it covers the how and why of music and how you the guitar player should think about it. Be forwarned this is not a book that will make you better overnight. In fact there is a chance that you will feel as though you have gotten worse at first. My reccommendation for those that can afford the time is to buy this book and use it right along side a good relative pitch ear training program....seriously. If you want to be a good musician then the methods in this book will provide the how and why while your ear will be responsible for the when.

I have A LOT of guitar books...as do most of you reading this. This book teaches you the way to think about the guitar. It will take a lot of serious practice to ingrain the material in these pages, but those that do will transition for ok players to real players.

Plain and simple: Best book I've bought in a long time.

One draw back. The sound tracks are corney sounding...but that's a very minor issue in light of what this book provides.

Great product for the adult beginner. The pace is pretty quick and doesn't patronize the learner, but you really should have an instructor. It doesn't emphasize learning all the notes from the beginning but key notes that you can build upon. Learning piano can be overwhelming, but this book tells you what you need to know to start and builds on the the basics so it's actually easier to progress faster and really feel like you are learning something. The exercises mix different skills so it will be easier to do music from different books and not be stuck playing twinkle twinkle for the rest of your life. I had a beginner keyboard book and didn't learn anything, but three lessons using this book and I was already excited to start reading sheet music.

I was fortunate enough to study Chord Melody electives with Bruce at GIT recently and this book covers the underlying skills to create nice chord movements.
Note that no Jazz standard complete chord melodies are included and emphasis is more on the chord part than the process of adapting a melody.
Some of the material here is part of the GIT Rhythm Level III core class, which Bruce also wrote and this book could also be used as a nice follow-on to 'Rhythm Guitar - The Complete Guide'.
The material is intermediate/advanced and Chapter 14 - More Chord Voicings contains plenty of fingerings I had never seen before, but which sound great if you can play them.
Since there is no 'Look inside' on Amazon yet I will list chapters;An overall fretboard view, Shells, Inversions, Harmonized scales, Chord scales, Slash chords, Harmonic moves, Voice leading, Cadences, Moving Lines, Substitution, Diminished chords, Chordal Interpretation, More Chord voicings.

I find this book has helped me with many of my theory problems and use it regularly.
As an average piano player and BBC award winning new music producer, using such programs
as Reason, Cubase and Pro Tools i find i can quickly ascertain the sort of sound I'm looking for, using
the scales and chords described in this book. With a now greater understanding i have created more
complex and intricate tracks using larger 7th and 9th chords and going from major to minor modes to great
effect. I don't feel i will need another theory book other than Composition for Computer Musicians
by the same author which i feel gives a complete a very good level of theory to add to your music
producing skills with of-course practice and hard work.

What can I say, it's just the first theory book I've had that really put everything in context for me. I used Kostka and Payne when I was in college and honestly that was terrible. All the examples were keyboard examples and as a non-keyboard player I just could not relate to anything that was happening. There were also simply too many details without a conceptual framework in that book. The Complete Musician is a very comprehensive, detailed and intelligent book with relevant, familiar examples across the repertoire and exercises that help to relate it all back to your own experience. I am about half-way through it now (revising for entering grad school in the fall) and having more fun with it than I would have imagined possible a few months ago. I really wish we had this in college instead.

Barrett Tagliarino books are easy to follow. This one uses a format similar to his Fretboard Workbook. Ideas are introduced with easy to read chord diagrams that revolve around the CAGED system of chord organization. Chord tones are emphasized as one solos. This outlines the chord progression making the soloist sound "melodic," instead of simply playing the right scale over chords.

This book expects the reader to be new to soloing and progresses in baby steps. The other book on the same subject by Berklee Press called "Melodic Improvisation" is much more advanced and focuses on heavy weight jazzers like Pat Martino, Wes Montgomery, Joe Pass, and monster players of that caliber. This book is accessible to rock, folk, bluegrass, and country guitarists, not just jazz cats. The secret to success, the point of the book, is to target chord tones as one solos, but how does one do that?

To answer that question, Barrett provides in depth guitar theory, a lot of break down and analysis, scalar choices, key center analysis, and a lot of down home humor along the way to keep things from getting overwhelming. All-in-all, Tagliarino has written another instructional book you'll want to keep in the library for continued study.

Most eccentrics do not become famous and most talented souls remain undiscovered. In "Lives of the Musicians", however, eccentrics with talent not only were discovered, but lauded long past their own lifetimes. Author Kathleen Krull has partnered with illustrator Kathryn Hewitt to create the world's first interesting children's collection of biographical information concerning some of the best composers ever to breathe.

The book spans the field of music from Verdi to Woody Guthrie. Each entry (there are sixteen in total) contains one picture and one description of the artist's life. These descriptions, as described by the author herself, "are offered now as a way of getting closer to the musicians - and the music". Every quirk and interesting tidbit is laid before the reader in the most wonderfully entrancing ways. Did you know that Bach once got into a knife fight in the streets? Or that Sir William Gilbert owned a bee named Buzfuz? It might be interesting to collect such fun but otherwise meaningless tidbits about composers' sometimes sordid lives, but Krull goes a step further. Facts included in each life explore the necessary details of their birth and death dates, how they were introduced to music, their lives, etc. Each section is also followed by information about their best-known works. What I liked about this book, however, was that the author did not choose to linger over their individual creations. A kid reading this book is not going to want to hear a long drawn out account of exactly why Chopin chose to write his Funeral March the way he did. You can find this information in a standard biography of Chopin's works. No, this is a book gives children the chance to acknowledge that all those hoity-toity names they've been forced to digest in elementary school music classes actually had interesting and sometimes wacky lives. Plus, the author is kind enough to include a section of musical terms, an index of composers, and a list meant, "For Further Reading ... And Listening", for those kids who wish to know more about these fascinating heroes of music.

Krull's method of writing is particularly adept when conveying irony. In her section devoted to Erik Satie (a perfect choice for this book, if ever there was one) she describes the composer's reaction to his own poverty.

"He once remarked, `It's odd. You find people in every bar willing to offer you a drink. No one ever dreams of presenting you with a sandwich'".

The next line then states off-handedly, "He died of cirrhosis of the liver at age fifty-nine". Kids may not get the joke, but I for one whole-heartedly approve of the author's choice to mention that fact after such a statement.

Because the book only contains sixteen composers, you can't help but wonder what the author's method of selection was. These composers certainly define the canon of Western music, with two women, an African-American, and a man of Jewish decent serving to bring a little diversity to the list. But why include Charles Ives and not Claude Debussy? Why Stravinsky and not Wagner? The only reasons I can find for some choices would be because some composers lived far more interesting lives than others. Certainly the range of oddities Krull has collected is fascinating.

This book is probably best for slightly older children. Krull is an honest biographer and does not skirt around the fact that Chopin and George Sand never married, or that Tchaikovsky was undoubtedly a homosexual. She does not fudge facts to make them more interesting or record hearsay and rumor (though she is prone to mentioning "legends", like that concerning Beethoven's death). All in all, you will not find a better or more entrancing way of introducing kids to the classical composers. And for those of you that wouldn't be able to tell Prokofiev from Stravinsky if you bumped into him in the street, let me recommend that you take a gander at this puppy as well. It's a heck of a lot of fun, and a hoot to boot.

I am a beginner, well only a few months in so I'm not that great.

I have a co-worker who is a professional guitar teacher and graduated from MI and recommended this book to me along with Guitar Soloing also by MI Press. He mentioned that I get both books and learn on them and go cover to cover working both together and i will get pretty good by the end of them.

I haev been working this book for over a week, I am still slow on progressions and transferring from one chord to the next (thats my bad since i'm new so it takes time to get better) But the book is very helpful and I am learning a lot. Chords and progressions is the very basic start of music and rhythm guitar is important for a basis to playing any music, knowing chords n such. I enjoy the book but am still learning. For those just starting out, this will get you into the mix but you have to practice like hell when you first start. My fingers hurt like hell when playing from this book as holding down multiple strings for long periods of time kills the tips of my fingers.

Great book, I would recommend it, almost any song can be played with this rhythm section book learned well. Once that's done you can move up to soloing and thats even more fun and challenging :)

My daughter's piano teacher gave her the assignment to read about Mozart as she started her first Mozart Minuet. My daughter was 7 at the time, and although she was reading at above 3rd grade level, I was shocked to find that there was NOTHING available on the internet or in her school library that give her information on composers at HER level. I finally found "Lives of the Musicians" and have actually purchased the book. It's just that good. She is able to read about each composer (for the most part the language is about her level, although she DOES need help with some of the words), and each section is engaging enough to keep her attention.

This book is a must for anyone with a child that wants or is assigned to learn about the great composers.

If you want to be successful in the music industry, there are many things you should know and do. However, even if you get everything right, you can prevent yourself from achieving great success by making critical errors along the way (and there are many potential faults can be made, if not careful). After much coaching and mentoring musisi and band find a career in music, the same pattern of false assumptions, problems and errors appear repeatedly. Here is 10 large.

Error # 10 - Not a very interesting picture congruent with your music. Most musisi (and band) is disparaging the importance of their image. Yes, music is music of'', but the music business success is about a total package that includes music, pictures, and shows the level of the other pilot should be developed fully in congruence.

Error # 9 - Trying to 'get your name out there'. Although this appears to be the main goal of mostmusisi> and the band, it is the wrong approach to begin with. Before trying to see and hear as much as possible, often more important to focus on 'change' for those who hear and see you become a real fan. This 'change' is the first key to the success of your campaign, not get to see or hear as much as possible.

Error # 8 - Believing that social media is key to website promotion and online music to musisi band. Social media websites are appliance. They are ONE part of the puzzle, online music marketing. companies music industry (record labels, artist managers, booking agents, etc.) far more interested in the popularity of your site, not how much your friends on MySpace, YouTube, Facebook or other sites that you do not own and control. Want to impress the industry with the promotion of your band? Develop your web site traffic.

Error # 7 - Not enough time to invest in building your music career. Mostmusisi> spend most of their time on music, but very little effort put into other important elements needed to make it in the music business. If you are already a musisi talented, you have to invest at least 50% of the time you start or advance your music career. If you are still developing skills in music, you still need to invest around 25% of music anda''masa in building the future of music career.

Error # 6 - Surroundings yourself with people who are negative,lazy and lack ambition. If you want to be very serious and professional musisi build a great career in music, then you really need to surround yourself with like-minded musisi.

Error # 5 - After just doing the usual life skills. Many musisi not in a good band, postpone the concert to develop skills and level of their presence. This is a big reason why musisi talent did not go to a good band that they really audisito. Your music may be good, but we live show''memerlukan more than good music. If people just want to hear the music they hear at home. Both fans and record labels want (and hope) to see a REAL presentation. Ignoring the results of this region in musisi talent and a forgettable band.

Error # 4 - Focus on increasing the number of 'non-fans' intensity' your fans. The 'total' fans you should always focus on your second (non-You are the first primary) if you want to be successful in the music industry. Actually, that's not the number of 'fans' the most important, the number of fanatics who will provide a more direct contribution to your success (or lack thereof). This especially occurs in the early career of this band. More focus on efforts to change your existing fans to rattle fanatics. Learn to do this and the amount of your fans as a whole will be increased through strong word of mouth to mouth.

Error # 3 -CASH FLOW enough to support your music career. Like it or not, need money to build a music career. Even if the other person / company paying your note, support tours, merchandise, etc., you still must have the freedom to pursue opportunities as they come. Unfortunately, many musisi miss an opportunity because they were not able to take advantage of the profit increase them.In eligible, you also need the flexibility to be able to spend the income that goes tostudio, go tours, etc. That's why learning how to teach the guitar is a way to reach them if you learn how to become a highly successful guitar teacher.

Error # 2 - Not enough depth in relation to your music. It's an old expression, "It's not what you know but whom we know." The music is often modified to, "Not that you know who you know." Actually, this is not a good question. The most important aspect of the connections in the music industry is howdepth is the relationship you currently have now and will grow in the future. You do not know or unknown, you want people to know you have a real connection with you so you are always on their mind when the opportunity to appear on its own. Ask yourself, "What can I do now to further deepen my existing relationships continuously?"

Error # 1 - Has the policy of misunderstanding about what the record company looking for - and hopeof new bands. This is a great topic, but in short it is useful to think of record companies such as banks that lend money to people or small business. Record companies make most of their decisions on who they will work with and what the conditions will be in much the same way that the bank will determine who they will lend money and what needs to be credit. Good record companies and banks basically want to see three things:

1. How much value you bring to the agreementnow.
2. How much risk you take now.
3. What is the potential and the risk that you may bring them in the future when they invest in you.

If you want to buy a house, the bank would like to know more about a specific home that you want to buy and even more about YOU. Record is of exactly the same, those curious about your music, your talent and your band, but they also care a lot (or more) of YOU (and your band friends) as a human. How about YOU makerecording contract investment good or bad for them.

This book is very useful. It is for the intermediate player. You know licks and songs, you sound good with the stuff you know, but looking at changes and using them for impromptu solos is beyond you (except for simplest roots rock, country, and blues). This book will take you to the next level, for all styles, but you will have to work at it. If you already are familiar with basic music theory (diatonic harmony, chord theory, modes), you will get some review. All in all, the book is organized well, encouraging to the student, and a true method as opposed to just a lot of scales/chords/etc. Chord-tone soloing is the basic skill for those who want to play what they hear in their heads as opposed to learning riffs and note-by-note solos. That is what this book is about. I am about 1/3 through and am already improving.

This book is not for the beginner or advanced player (you can already solo against some sophisticated changes.)

Se vc tem noções de leitura esse livro vale a pena. Assim como o outro leitor que comentou, lá pelo capítulo 8 minhas fraquezas começaram a aparecer e tenho me divertindo insistindo nelas e verificando de maneira sistemática aonde estão minhas forças e deficiências.
Nesse mundo de métodos para guitarra vc encontra muita coisa para te transformar num "soleiro" chato de galochas. Ótimo ter um método organizado de guitarra base, que é o que nós guitarristas fazemos e 95% do tempo em que tocamos, portanto, é a coisa mais importante a aprender.
Não é perfeito porque faltou um CD, que tornaria o livro mais acessível a quem não sabe ler música. Se é o seu caso, só compre se vc tem um professor particular que pode ler por vc. Caso contrário vai simplesmente desperdiçar o seu dinheiro.

This book is best for those who have already taken a full course in tonal harmony and understand it well from a functional perspective but want to understand it better from a linear perspective.

It is a very complete course in common practice tonal harmony. It is in many ways an updated successor to Aldwell & Schachter in that it pays attention to every minute detail of voice leading and part-writing. Varieties of V-I take over 100 pages alone. For those interesting in mastering the common practice writing style, this is much better than, for example Benward or Piston, which focus more on the functional aspects of harmony, but neglect the linear. If you have this, W. A. Mathieu's Harmonic Experience, Bert Ligon's Jazz Theory text, and Ludmila Udmela's text on contemporary harmony you have 90% of what you need to know about tonal harmony.

Who is this book not for? It is not for those interested in learning harmony in Jazz, Pop, or 20th century styles. Also, the title "Complete Musician" is a misonomer. It is only common-practice harmony.

This book requires a solid foundation of the basics of music theory to absorb--I can imagine it being very confusing if used for unprepared college freshmen, because it doesn't spend much time on fundamentals.

I really like this book and have found it very helpful. The best part is that it is not specific to traditional guitar fingerings or piano like many chord theory books, therefore it helps me even though I play bouzouki tuning on my four-string guitar. And if I ever switch to mandolin, it will be useful there too.

I was really disappointed with the book. There are some basic rhythm and harmony information, but it is very sparse. If you want to learn about rhythms or harmony, a more focused book should be sought, and not the bundle of weak summaries this book provides. The book is very short with 12 pages. The book gives a very basic view on the relation of chords and chord functions. It has some other stuff, like chord construction, scales, and transposition. The best thing about the book is the chord wheel on the cover. It has a moveable plastic to set to a key and it will tell you what relation the chords are in the key. Don't buy the book if you are looking of in depth music theory, buy it for the interactive chord wheel diagram on the cover.

I have played guitar for over 10 years. I am a guitar instructor as well. Sometimes it's difficult to keep all the chord theory in my head at all times. This little tool, the Chord Wheel, is an excellent aid that I find myself using often.

The Chord Wheel has a spinnable template that lays over the circle of fifths. Instantly, it helps you understand the flats and sharps in each key. Once you spin it to a certain key, it gives you all the main chord substitutions for every step in the gey--genious. The Chord Wheel also has some excellent chord theory instruction within its few pages.

I use The Chord Wheel as part of my teaching curriculum. I haven't found a better tool to teach the circle of fifths or to introduce my students to the power of basic chord substitutions.

After a recent visit to Bremen in Germany, and souvenir t-shirts for the grandkids, I decided to purchase copies of the "Bremen Town Musicians" as Christmas presents. I am very pleased with my purchase. I am impressed with the quality of English used, which would surely be of benefit to young ears. Also, the text included some lesser-used words such as 'hound, lute, minstrels', great for vocabulary building. Young minds absorb so much, so let us give them worthwhile things to soak up. The text also lends itself to reading aloud with lots of expression and drama, always enjoyed by children. The illustrations are simple but superb, plentiful and complements the text beautifully - a great help for young readers. I can't wait to read to them on Christmas Day!

This book is pretty much useless unless you are a total novice in both computer music production and composition/arrangement, since you if you're beyond novice level, you probably already known everything the book covers. The author also did not do his due diligence on research. He called VST "Virtual Sythesizer Technology," when it's actually "Virtual Studio Technology. The guy has never heard of the internet? It's the first thing that comes up when you search "VST." Any computer musician worth his salt knows this--it's really really basic stuff. He then refers to plugins as VST's. That is also incorrect. They are plugins using the VST format, and if anything VSTI would be better than VST, but only for virtual instruments and does not apply to effects plugins. I'm guessing this guy probably doesn't even hang around prominent sites for computer musicians like KVRAudio. He then also refers to DAW and Ableton Live separately saying both can host VST's, as if Ableton Live isn't a DAW. Does he even know what DAW stands for? It almost seems like he's only got a cursory understanding of all this technology and terminology, and the half-assed his way through the research when writing the book. Maybe it's just carelessness, but don't people proofread their manuscripts before sending them to the printer? The instructional aspect of the book actually isn't bad, and if yo are a total beginner, it can certainly be helpful to you.

This lesson book and CD is exceptional. What does the beginner or intermidiate guitar player do between strumming those endless chords to make the music more interesting? How do you fill in those "spaces" in your playing to take things to the next level? What can you do that sounds impressive and professional besides just strumming chords or finger picking them? The answers to ALL of those questions are right here in this book!

The book lays out how that you can add interesting melody lines and great "riffs" or phrases to your chords and does it in an easy to understand way with examples that you can both see and hear. The musical solos are based on the current chords that you are playing, so both hearing them and adding them in becomes easier. In a nutshell these lead pieces make sense, musically and formationally and are easy to transition into with your current chord understanding.

I would rate this book as "excellent" for those who have a basic understanding of chords and chord movement and guitar students who would classify themselves as being on an intermediate level. This course will take you to advanced level if you apply the concepts!
