I was expecting intermediate to advanced instruction from this book about chord tone soloing. This book starts from VERY BASIC instruction, and works itself up to basic/intermediate soloing. The first solo in the book, as the author calls it, consists of two notes! Just two, in order, played over and over. Don't buy this book unless you are a very basic beginner!

I recommend this book as a reference to music teachers and everyone who is novice, but want to understand music. Not only this book helps readers who cannot play any instrument, as long as they know enough computer knowledge as self-described by the title, it also clearly explains the foundation of music. After making people understand the pitch and duration of notes on the staff system, it explains the way of measuring interval and then the definition or feature of each interval, base on semitone measurement. After assuring the readers about the perfect harmony of the fourth and the fifth interval, the author explained why this leads to the dominant and sub-dominant quality of the chord. The mode, the scale and the key signature are usually confusing, but the author explanation started from the simple C Major and then compares with A Minor, and then leads to the understanding of scaling system, major and minor of the seven diatonic, including the complex scale. Within the process, the author explained how to establish various key signatures based on a particular scale, not just the cycle of fifths.

Thanks again, to the author. This is really a godsend.

There are so many things musicians can do to keep their calendar full if we actually treat it like a business. This book is the advanced user manual for your guitar. If you already know the basics such as chords and scales then this book is EXACTLY what you need.

Basically it covers the how and why of music and how you the guitar player should think about it. Be forwarned this is not a book that will make you better overnight. In fact there is a chance that you will feel as though you have gotten worse at first. My reccommendation for those that can afford the time is to buy this book and use it right along side a good relative pitch ear training program....seriously. If you want to be a good musician then the methods in this book will provide the how and why while your ear will be responsible for the when.

I have A LOT of guitar books...as do most of you reading this. This book teaches you the way to think about the guitar. It will take a lot of serious practice to ingrain the material in these pages, but those that do will transition for ok players to real players.

Plain and simple: Best book I've bought in a long time.

One draw back. The sound tracks are corney sounding...but that's a very minor issue in light of what this book provides.

Great product for the adult beginner. The pace is pretty quick and doesn't patronize the learner, but you really should have an instructor. It doesn't emphasize learning all the notes from the beginning but key notes that you can build upon. Learning piano can be overwhelming, but this book tells you what you need to know to start and builds on the the basics so it's actually easier to progress faster and really feel like you are learning something. The exercises mix different skills so it will be easier to do music from different books and not be stuck playing twinkle twinkle for the rest of your life. I had a beginner keyboard book and didn't learn anything, but three lessons using this book and I was already excited to start reading sheet music.

I was fortunate enough to study Chord Melody electives with Bruce at GIT recently and this book covers the underlying skills to create nice chord movements.
Note that no Jazz standard complete chord melodies are included and emphasis is more on the chord part than the process of adapting a melody.
Some of the material here is part of the GIT Rhythm Level III core class, which Bruce also wrote and this book could also be used as a nice follow-on to 'Rhythm Guitar - The Complete Guide'.
The material is intermediate/advanced and Chapter 14 - More Chord Voicings contains plenty of fingerings I had never seen before, but which sound great if you can play them.
Since there is no 'Look inside' on Amazon yet I will list chapters;An overall fretboard view, Shells, Inversions, Harmonized scales, Chord scales, Slash chords, Harmonic moves, Voice leading, Cadences, Moving Lines, Substitution, Diminished chords, Chordal Interpretation, More Chord voicings.

I find this book has helped me with many of my theory problems and use it regularly.
As an average piano player and BBC award winning new music producer, using such programs
as Reason, Cubase and Pro Tools i find i can quickly ascertain the sort of sound I'm looking for, using
the scales and chords described in this book. With a now greater understanding i have created more
complex and intricate tracks using larger 7th and 9th chords and going from major to minor modes to great
effect. I don't feel i will need another theory book other than Composition for Computer Musicians
by the same author which i feel gives a complete a very good level of theory to add to your music
producing skills with of-course practice and hard work.

What can I say, it's just the first theory book I've had that really put everything in context for me. I used Kostka and Payne when I was in college and honestly that was terrible. All the examples were keyboard examples and as a non-keyboard player I just could not relate to anything that was happening. There were also simply too many details without a conceptual framework in that book. The Complete Musician is a very comprehensive, detailed and intelligent book with relevant, familiar examples across the repertoire and exercises that help to relate it all back to your own experience. I am about half-way through it now (revising for entering grad school in the fall) and having more fun with it than I would have imagined possible a few months ago. I really wish we had this in college instead.
